Shocked that Corey had been fatally shot more than 200 miles from his home in Dallas-Fort Worth, Cathy wanted to understand how she would get through this grief.“There’s got to be other mothers out here,” Cathy Taylor thought.
Across North Texas, she found about a dozen moms dealing with a similar loss within the first few months. Within about six months of Corey’s death, in 2013, Taylor was starting her nonprofit, Journey4ward, which now offers free, unlimited counseling to survivors of violent crime.The mother of a boy in the neighborhood, with whom Corey’s son would play, became the first counselor at the organization. Another mom who got help from the nonprofit has now launched an organization of her own.After seeing the devastation a homicide has on a family, they were driven to help others move beyond the loss. Taylor still remembers looking for 27-year-old Corey, who was taken to a hospital, where he later died. She sought closure, dealt with a range of emotions around the killing and went to the murder trial. Taylor remembers thinking, “This doesn’t happen to my family.” Now, she shares her story with others facing similarly painful realities.”Not that people don’t grieve or miss their loved ones as much,” Taylor said. “It’s a different kind of grief. It was unexpected. It was traumatic the way he was murdered.”It was the afternoon. Corey was sitting on the couch while visiting a friend in Houston, Taylor said. Someone knocked on the door, and Corey was shot in the head, Taylor recalled learning.She remembers scrambling to find her son. Taylor and her husband called hospitals. They were told Corey wasn’t at the hospital, for safety reasons, she said
