A Cleburne man has been sentenced to over three decades in federal prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping a 13-year-old girl at gunpoint. Steven Robert Sablan, 63, was handed a 420-month prison sentence and ordered to pay over $1,100 in restitution by a California federal judge on Friday. He had pleaded guilty in January 2024 to one count of kidnapping. The crime took place on July 6, 2023, in San Antonio, when Sablan abducted the young girl.
He proceeded to sexually assault her repeatedly at gunpoint during a terrifying drive to Long Beach, California. The victim was eventually rescued after a concerned citizen noticed her holding a 'Help Me' sign in the window of Sablan's car and called 911. Law enforcement officials lauded the sentence as a crucial step in protecting children. Acting United States Attorney Joseph T. McNally emphasized the importance of safeguarding young people and commended the collaborative efforts of federal and local agencies. Akil Davis, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office, stated that the FBI is committed to holding accountable those who exploit and victimize children. Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish expressed gratitude for the officers and federal partners who worked tirelessly to secure justice in this case
