A Texas man diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his lungs underwent a successful, minimally invasive procedure using Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy and Firefly technology, which allowed doctors to locate, mark, and remove sub-centimeter nodules. Eric Van Sciver, who was almost given the all-clear after battling colon cancer, discovered that his fight was far from over. Despite clear scopes and scans, anomalies were found in his lung scan.
During a case review in Austin, a thoracic surgeon introduced Eric to a game-changing technology that could potentially save his life. Dr. Rachel Medbery with Pulmonologist Dr. William Bartek, who has worked with nodules as small as six and a half millimeters, teamed up with Dr. Medbery. Eric’s CT scan was put through a robotic program, providing a real-world view of his lungs and a virtual view to create a 3-D image. This virtual view provided a path to the small lung nodules.
Dr. Medbery successfully removed the nodules, achieving clear margins. Eric is now cancer-free. The procedure resulted in more precise, smaller incisions, and less downtime. Eric was discharged less than 36 hours after the procedure began.
