A 21-year-old man in Texas is facing charges after allegedly offering $500,000 to a mother for her baby's organs and shooting a truck driver following a car crash.

A man accused of shooting a semitruck driver after a crash on Interstate 35 in San Antonio had also offered $500,000 to harvest a baby's organs. Jose Israel Teran Jr., 21, is in the Bexar County jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and for the purchase and sale of human organs. A judge set Teran's bail at $225,000.

On Monday, Teran was involved in a collision between his SUV and a semitruck during rush hour traffic on the north lanes of Interstate 35, near Thousand Oaks Drive. Teran pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the semitruck driver, wounding him in the leg, a sergeant said at the scene. Teran was arrested at the crash site. An affidavit supporting Teran's arrest details how one week before the shooting, Teran responded to a group text message that wasn't meant for him. On Dec. 30, a mother sent a text to several relatives, inviting them to her 9-month-old daughter's baptism at a church on the Northwest Side. She attached the baby's photo in the message. She included Teran's cell number, thinking that it still belonged to her uncle. 'Good morning and happy early new year! I am attaching an invitation to Lucy's baptism. No pressure to attend I just wanted to invite everyone ...' she said, adding the name of the church. 'We will attend the 12 noon mass then the baptism starts at 1:30. We will have a light lunch and refreshments to follow at our house afterwards. Hope you can make it. ' Teran immediately replies: 'That's a nice Caucasian baby how much you want?' an affidavit states. The mother immediately blocks Teran, but her aunt notices more texts from him. 'Are you not interested in selling? I'm willing to start the bid at 500k,' Teran texts, according to the affidavit. The girl's father then calls Teran's number. Teran answers, telling him that he was interested in purchasing their child and would be willing to pay for their child 'in cash or bitcoin,' the affidavit states. Teran tells the father that he purchases babies for their organs, and that he's willing to meet that same night for the purchase. He said he knew both the address of the church and their home address of the baby, according to the affidavit. After the call, the mother told police that she was in fear for the safety of her children. She had been checking her street for unknown vehicles and taking extra precautions when her children played outside. They also stopped taking evening walks through the neighborhood. As the detective was typing the search warrant, they discovered Teran had been detained in connection with an unrelated case Monday — the I-35 crash turned shooting. A detective met with Teran at the SAPD Public Safety Headquarters downtown to discuss the text messages. Teran told the detective that he thought the message thread he received was spam. The detective noted that it is unknown why Teran continued sending messages even though the mother told him she had a 'wrong number,' the affidavit states. Texas Penal Code Section 48.02 defines the prohibition of the purchase and sale of human organs. A person commits an offense if he or she knowingly offers to buy, offers to sell, acquires, receives, sells, or otherwise transfers any human organ for valuable consideration
