ALLEN, Texas — (ALLEN, Texas) -- The suspect in this weekend's mass shooting at an outdoor mall in Allen, Texas, had eight weapons with him at the time, all of which were legally obtained, authorities said Tuesday.
The alleged mass shooter, Mauricio Garcia, who died after a confrontation with police, had three weapons on his person and five in his car when he allegedly opened fire at the Allen Premium Outlets, Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Hank Sibley said at a news conference Tuesday. Eight people were killed and seven others were injured in the Saturday afternoon massacre.
"Even if he couldn't have purchased these firearms legally, he probably could have obtained them illegally, or use some other vehicle -- literally a vehicle -- to perpetrate something similar. ... They will find a way," Sibley said. It"looks like he targeted the location, rather than a specific group of people. He was very random in the people he killed," Sibley said.Garcia had no criminal history, Sibley said.
Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey on Tuesday commended an unidentified officer who he said showed tremendous bravery by confronting the gunman. Harvey also recognized slain victim Christian LaCour, a security guard who the chief said evacuated someone to safety and then was shot while"courageously remaining to help others."
