The Texas Longhorns overcame a strong start from the Oklahoma Sooners to win their SEC opener in a closely fought game.
The No. 9-ranked Sooners played a closely contested 40-minute game against the No. 5 Longhorns on Thursday night. The game featured six lead changes, 54 fouls, and a 12-minute video review after a scuffle under the Texas basket in the final minute of the third quarter. The game was tied entering the fourth quarter, but Texas managed to control the ball and win 80-73, snapping their two-game losing streak to the Sooners.
Texas improved to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in SEC play, while Oklahoma fell to 12-2 and 0-1. Oklahoma started strong, building a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but struggled with turnovers throughout the game, committing eight in both the second and third quarters. While Oklahoma shot more free throws, making 18 of 25 compared to Texas' 17 of 21, their poor three-point shooting (2 of 16) proved to be a major obstacle. Payton Verhulst led Oklahoma with a strong performance, committing only one turnover despite the team's struggles.
