The former Frisco Lone Star standout has the inside track to start at middle linebacker for the Longhorns.
Texas defender Jaylan Ford, left, recorded 36 tackles, 6.0 tackles for losses and one quarterback pressure during the Longhorns’ final six games last season.AUSTIN — There was no escaping Jaylan Ford during his senior season at Frisco Lone Star. He averaged nearly 10 tackles a game that year for the one-loss Rangers, devouring ball carriers and earning a place on the 5A All-State second team.
Rather than go “little fish, big pond” at another program, the lowest-ranked player in Texas’ 2020 signing class has spent the past two years repudiating what some scouts and analysts believed of him. Now entering his third season, Ford not only has the inside track to start at middle linebacker, he also has the requisite skill to lead the Longhorns in tackles and help turn around a defense that was a full-fledged disaster in 2021.
The key for Ford, as it is for most young players, is establishing reliability. Though, to be fair, that’s a trait the entire defense lacked a year ago. Ford flashed at times last season, especially once his reps increased. Texas allowed 412 yards per game in the second half of the year, 29 fewer than during the first six games when Ford played a more limited role.
