Texas lawmakers have raked in $19 million from Harlan Crow, billionaire friend of Clarence Thomas

According to federal and state financial records, Harlan Crow, a Dallas real magnate, has donated more than $10.9 million to federal campaign committees and $8.4 million to state campaigns in Texas including to Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dade Phelan.Just last year, Crow donated more than $100,000 to Abbott and has given the 3-term governor more than $316,000 since 2006.
“I have been a donor to moderate Republican individuals running for office, as well as groups that are involved in that kind of world to support more moderate Republican stuff,” Crow said.He gave $160,000 over the years to former House Speaker Joe Straus and more than $500,000 to Associated Republicans of Texas, a group aligned with the former speaker. Crow has also occasionally given to Democrats, including State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, who received $12,500. He sent $15,000 to State Rep.
Crow told ProPublica that he and his wife Kathy have known Clarence and Ginni Thomas since 1996 and described them as “very dear friends.” He said the hospitality he provided them is no different than that which they extended to their other close friends.
