Over Twitter late at night, an Austin Democrat and Denton County Republican in the Texas House joined forces. Several Republicans have come out in support of repealing the taxes.

In nocturnal tweets late Tuesday, Austin Democratic Rep. Donna Howard and Frisco Republican Rep. Jared Patterson sealed a deal to co-author a repealing measure. “To see somebody speak out like that, who represents a conservative portion of the Legislature, to know that he’s on board bodes well for us passing this bill,” said Howard, a 17-year House member who heads the“Just removing the sales tax is not going to make the overall box of diapers affordable, per se, but it does add up because of the number of diapers that one has to purchase,” she said.Howard’s past bills to free tampons and diapers from sales tax never passed.

His and Howard’s joint push stands out in a session when Republican and Democratic lawmakers appear ready to clash on school vouchers, LGBTQ rights, public school libraries and curriculum, and gun rights. Removing the sales tax on diapers and feminine hygiene products, such as tampons, pads and menstrual cups, appears to have strong bipartisan support.
