Tuesday was the first day Texas lawmakers could file bills ahead of next year’s legislative session.

There were more than 1,500 filed across a range of issues, including border security, abortion access, education and many others. The Legislature meets biennially, meaning lawmakers have had a full year to brainstorm ideas for new legislation. Only a few hundred bills are passed each year by both the GOP -led House and Senate , meaning the vast majority of bills filed Tuesday will ultimately fall by the wayside.

In the 2023 legislative session, more than 8,000 total bills were filed by members of the House or Senate. Every two years, the House passes roughly between 500 and 1,000 bills, while the Senate has passed almost exactly 500 for each session in the past decade, according to information kept by the Legislative Reference Library.

Texas book-banning law gutted by appeals court in a blow to state Republicans Democrats also filed many bills to increase public school funding, tie future school funding hikes to inflation and create new revenue streams for schools. Abbott has said he supports “fully funded” public schools and also wants to boost teacher pay, but only as part of a package deal that includes authorization of his private school voucher program.
