Next month, a man is scheduled to be executed by the state for the murder of his daughter, after two decades on death row. A growing coalition of advocates say
Robert Roberson , 57, was convicted of capital murder in the death of his two-year-old daughter, Nikki . Last month, Texas ' highest criminal court moved forward with Roberson's scheduled execution date on October 17. His attorneys and advocates are calling for clemency.
Roberson's attorneys have filed a petition to Governor Greg Abbott and the Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant clemency to Roberson, saying that "Evidence that his jury never heard proves no crime occurred." In a virtual press conference Tuesday morning, several stakeholders backed the call for clemency for Roberson, including Brian Wharton, who was the lead detective in Roberson's case and testified against him in his trial.
