Rep. Jasmine Crockett suggested that Kamala Harris' campaign team would looked at her sideways when she offered to campaign for Harris in rural regions.
President Donald Trump hosts a Cabinet meeting following the announcement of an agreement to the first phase of a peace plan in Gaza.WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 28: Rep. Jasmine Crockett speaks during a press conference with other Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and House Judiciary Committee during a break in the closed-door deposition of Hunter Biden, son of U.
S. President Joe Biden, in the O'Neill House Office Building on February 28, 2024 in Washington, DC. The meeting is part of the Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Rep. Jasmine Crockett suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign team looked at her sideways when she offered to campaign for Harris in more rural regions. In a clip of a the podcast "Howdy Politics" hosted by Kat Vargas, Crockett shared that while serving as a surrogate for Harris on the 2024 presidential campaign trail, she was often sent to more urban areas. But the Congresswoman, who represents the Dallas region, said she should be interacting with voters in more rural areas of Southeast Texas. “I said, ‘Stop sending me to all the urban centers," Crockett said. "Yes, I can do that, yes, but you got plenty of surrogates that can go do that. You need to send me to rural America.’ And they were looking like, ‘Huh?'”"I know what it’s like when the paper mill is threatened with shutting down, or Cooper Tire may shutter. I know the struggles and the angst. I know how these small-town economies work. I get it because I lived it. I still have property out thereI am like’Just try me. Like, trust me on this.'” Crockett went on to say that rural America's perception of her, typically based on Fox News' coverage, is changed once they spend time with her in a campaign rally, a town hall, they'll see that she's "fighting harder to do right by them." However, Crockett said the campaign failed to take her suggestion to heart until the near tail end of the campaign. At that point, Crockett said she didn't have enough time for travel. Meanwhile, many of Harris' rallies and campaign events in urban areas included performances by Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, and Lil Jon, in an effort to win over black voters. Crockett said she is more in touch with rural Americans than those that live in the city. “I shouldn’t change who I am, because I am right on this," Crockett said. I know that the rural hospitals are shutting down, and I know it’s not because of policies that I’m pushing. I know that it’s the policies of the people that they have elected that are literally reducing their life expectancy, and I think it’s wrong,” said Crockett. Crockett's comments just weeks after Harris' book 107 Days was released, in which she talks about her presidential campaign. In some sections of the book, Harris' fixation on race and identity politics is revealed to shape key decisions on her presidential campaign, such as who she selected to be her running mate. Harrisa gay man, was her first choice for vice president, but didn't think she could pull it off since she wasn't a "straight white man." ‘But we were already asking a lot of America: to accept a woman, a Black woman, a Black woman married to a Jewish man," Harris wrote. "‘Part of me wanted to say, Screw it, let’s just do it. But knowing what was at stake, it was too big of a risk." The National News Desk reached out to Harris's office for comment, and had not heard back by the time of publication.
