Texas law requires high schools to register students to vote | Opinion
This is unfortunate. Helping younger generations register and vote reduces civic disengagement and increases political influence, especially of those who feel left behind by a current political system unwilling to respond to the needs of real people, something I argued with my colleague, Bruce Meredith, in aIndeed, aside from the rich educational experience this statute can provide, improving voter registration can lead to a slew of benefits over the long term.
But let’s suspend party politics for a moment, elevate a shared concern for democracy, and return to Souter’s call that he asked schools to answer. In this light, Texas schools can crack open the door to democracy for hundreds of thousands of students. Texas has a long history of influencing American public education and, unfortunately, not always for the better. It left its mark in 2001 when Congress passed the No Child Left Behind Act. This signature legislative achievement of President George W. Bush was based on a model imposed when he was governor of Texas.After a decade of implementation, reading and math scores barely budged.

Environmental groups sue FAA over SpaceX Texas rocket launchWildlife and environmental groups sued the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday over SpaceX’s launch last month of its giant rocket from Texas. SpaceX’s Starship soared 24 miles (39 kilometers) high before exploding over the Gulf of Mexico on April 20.
