Flower Mound coach Brian Basil and former NFL kicker John Carney weighed in after Auburn’s crucial misses in the Peach Bowl .Arizona State Sun Devils defensive backs Keith Abney II (1) and Javan Robinson (12) signal ‘no good’ after Texas Longhorns place kicker Bert Auburn (45) missed a field goal in a CFP quarterfinal game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, January 1, 2025. The Texas Longhorns defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils, 39-31, in the Peach Bowl .
step out onto the field in some of the College Football Playoff’s most critical moments comes as no surprise to Flower Mound coach Brian Basil.During Auburn’s first year as the starting kicker at Flower Mound in 2018, Basil and his staff sent him out during a key moment in a district game to attempt a 50-yarder, which he nailed. “I think everybody in the stadium was impressed, even the opponent,” Basil said. “As a sophomore to come out in a game like that and at that distance, that’s where we really thought he’s got the ability to go out there on a big stage and perform at a high level.”Auburn has done just that in his three years as the starting kicker for the Longhorns, breaking the Texas record for most field goals in program history with 66 and surpassing Longhorn greats Justin Tucker and Cameron Dicker.“Bert’s always been very consistent,” Basil said. “I think the thing that specialists go through is that nobody’s perfect. At any position, people are going to make mistakes. If you miss a tackle or drop a pass, that’s something that does not get as magnified as a kick.” In his first two years as the starter, Auburn connected on over 80% of his field goal attempts. This season, his numbers have taken a slight dip, dropping to 64% (16 of 25). He is just 6 of 14 (43%) from 40-plus yards this year compared to 18 of 25 (72%) during his first two seasons. However, he is still a perfect 178 of 178 on extra points in his career.Because of his history, Texas entered the Peach Bowl with a clear kicking advantag
