WildLife Partners had sued Frank Thomas 'Tom' Shumate Jr. over the death of two kudu -- African antelope.
BOERNE — Embattled businessman Frank Thomas “Tom” Shumate Jr. was ordered by a Kendall County jury to pay $594,000 in a case stemming from two exotic animals he sold to a breeder that ended up dead. After hearing three days of testimony and deliberating about 2½ hours Friday, 12 jurors unanimously found Shumate had committed fraud and theft in his dealings with WildLife Partners LLC, a Boerne -based buyer, seller and breeder of exotic animals.
Tom Shumate, businessman linked to burned corporate records case, now on trial over dead animals The jury awarded the business essentially everything it asked for: $72,000 for the two dead animals; another $72,000 in damages; $200,000 in punitive damages; and $250,000 attorneys’ fees and costs. Shumate’s lawyer had told jurors they should award WildLife Partners nothing. David Prichard, a San Antonio lawyer representing WildLife Partners, said justice was served.
