Cedric Ricks, a Texas death row inmate, was executed after apologizing to the family of his victims, including the surviving son he brutally stabbed. The execution, the first in Texas for 2026, followed the rejection of his final appeals, which contested the jury selection process.

In his final moments before execution, Cedric Ricks, the Texas death row inmate convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend and her eight-year-old son, offered a heartfelt apology to the surviving family members, particularly the victim’s son, whom he had brutally stabbed during the 2013 attack. The execution, carried out Wednesday at the Huntsville Unit prison, marked the first in Texas for 2026.

Facing seven relatives of his victims, who observed from behind a glass window, Ricks expressed profound remorse for his actions, acknowledging the immense pain he inflicted. He specifically addressed Marcus Figueroa, the son of Roxann Sanchez, who survived the attack at the age of 12 despite suffering 25 stab wounds. Ricks expressed his sorrow for taking away Marcus's mother and brother, expressing hope that one day the family could find forgiveness and peace from the tragedy he caused. The execution proceeded via lethal injection of pentobarbital, which was administered at 6:55 p.m. CDT, ending a case that had garnered significant attention due to the brutality of the crime and the lingering impact on the surviving family.\The heinous crime took place in May 2013 at Sanchez’s apartment in Bedford, a suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. During an argument, Ricks, 51, turned violent, repeatedly stabbing Sanchez, 30, and her son, Anthony Figueroa, with a kitchen knife. The attack unfolded after Sanchez’s two sons attempted to intervene in the argument. Marcus Figueroa survived the attack by feigning death after being stabbed 25 times. The other son was murdered. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Sanchez died from stab wounds to the neck, blunt force trauma to the head, and asphyxia. Ricks fled the scene in Sanchez’s car and subsequently confessed to family members. Authorities apprehended him in Garvin County, Oklahoma, and extradited him back to Texas. At his trial in 2014, Ricks was found guilty of capital murder. His defense team claimed self-defense after the boys intervened, a claim that was rejected by the court. Earlier the same week he committed the murders, he had appeared in court on an assault charge involving Sanchez.\The legal proceedings leading up to Ricks’ execution saw his attorneys file appeals contesting the jury selection process, claiming that prosecutors improperly excluded potential jurors based on race. However, the Texas Attorney General’s Office maintained that the jury selection decisions were race-neutral and that prior courts had already upheld them. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rejected Ricks’ final appeal without comment on Wednesday. Prior to this, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles had already denied his request for clemency or a temporary reprieve. Throughout the legal process, the severity of the crime and the suffering inflicted upon the victims' family remained central. The execution underscored the finality of the judicial system's decision, yet the events also brought attention to the lasting emotional trauma experienced by survivors, particularly the surviving son, Marcus Figueroa, who continues to bear the physical and emotional scars of the devastating attack. Ricks expressed his desire to find peace after death, hoping to meet his victims in heaven and apologize face to face, offering a final plea for forgiveness from the families he had impacted
