The 89th Texas Legislation session may be heading into uncharted territory as it's set to begin on Tuesday, January 14. As of the weekend leading up to it, the Texas House of Representatives has not voted in a Speaker of the House. If one is not voted in on Tuesday, the House will not be able to start working when the session begins.of 2024, the Texas House GOP Caucus met to vote on a new Speaker nominee.
But the race was still on since neither candidate received 76 votes to secure the position. Burrows believed he has enough support from Democrats to win the Speaker race, but that won't be decided until Tuesday's vote.Research Director with Texas Politics Project, Joshua Blank, said if neither candidate receives 76 votes on Tuesday, it will delay when the Texas House can start operating this session.
"We can't even get to that position of committee assignments, adoption of the rules, and ultimately basic function of the house until the House agrees on a Speaker," he said."If they can't agree to a Speaker on Tuesday, then the first order of business on Wednesday is figuring out who the speaker is," he said.
Blank said what could make the biggest impact on Tuesday's vote is the overwhelming Democrat opposition of David Cook. At the December meeting, Burrows announced he has received enough votes from both parties to become the next Speaker of the House.
