San Antonio schools face teacher shortages and a lack of Black teachers, leaving Black students with little representation.
Lackland ISD is led by Burnie Roper, a Black superintendent who was born and raised in San Antonio.
Growing up, the few African American teachers he did have served as role models, proof of people like him obtaining college degrees. He holds a doctorate and recognizes the importance of having Black educators in schools — but hiring them is not his focus right now., schools are looking to hire anybody qualified to educate students. But in Bexar County, that has come with a lack of Black teachers.
Countywide, nearly 12.5% of Black students attended a school without a single Black teacher in 2021-22. And though Texas Education Agency data shows that districts have hired more than 200 Black teachers since the 2017-18 school year, the percentage of Black students without a Black teacher has grown.
In the 2017-18 school year, the percentage of Black students in Bexar County without a Black teacher was 11% — meaning it's increased by nearly two percentage points in the span of five years. Although both the number of Black students and teachers increased, an additional 32 schools have zero Black teachers.
Among the 10 counties with the highest number of Black students, Bexar County has the second highest number of Black students attending a school without a Black teacher — and the highest percentage.A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research showed that Black students who have a Black teacher by the time they’re in third grade are
