Rick Urrutia of CPS Energy stands at the utility’s Braunig Power Station in February, where it has increased the use of temporary insulating structures since the state’s power grid experienced massive failures during the extended subfreezing temperatures that gripped Texas in February 2021.On May 12, Texas’ power grid operator told at least one power plant to delay its scheduled repairs and keep operating to help meet demand during hotter-than-expected May weather.
But this month has been warmer than most Mays of the past decade, leading to higher electricity demand and causing ERCOT to scramble to keep as many plants operating as possible.Amid warnings from ERCOT, San Antonio’s CPS Energy says its power plants fully operational ERCOT’s public statement said “six power generation facilities tripped offline resulting in the loss of about 2,900 MW of electricity” — enough to power more than 580,000 homes. “At this time, all reserve generation resources available are operating.”
CPS Energy’s power plants, including the J.K. Spruce Plant at the Calaveras Power Station in San Antonio, were not among those in Texas that went offline unexpectedly last week amid high temperatures.Richmond said ERCOT is “taking a top-down approach” in determining when to tell companies to delay needed repairs and “doesn’t take into account what these complex machines need to make sure they get maintenance done.
