Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at full staff for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, despite a White House proclamation that U.S. flags remain at half-staff until late January to honor the late President Jimmy Carter.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott defied a White House directive on Monday, ordering flags at the state Capitol and other government buildings to be flown at full staff for President-elect Donald Trump 's inauguration next week. This action directly contradicted President Joe Biden 's proclamation, which mandated U.S. flags be flown at half-staff until late January to honor the late President Jimmy Carter .

Abbott, a Republican and staunch Trump ally, defended his decision by stating, 'While we honor the service of a former President, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America.' Biden issued the flag-lowering order on December 29, the day Carter died at the age of 100, in accordance with U.S. flag code which dictates that flags should not be raised to full height following a president's death. This 30-day proclamation applies to flags at the White House and numerous federal and public buildings across the nation.Other Republican governors, such as Florida's Ron DeSantis, cited Biden's proclamation when announcing last month that flags would be flown at half-staff at local and state buildings until sunset on January 28. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Abbott's order. Trump, in a recent Truth Social post, criticized Democrats for their 'giddy' anticipation of the American flag potentially being at 'half mast' during his inauguration. He expressed that 'Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out.' A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Abbott's announcement. Notably, the Associated Press reported that flags at Trump's Palm Beach club in Florida had been returned to full staff on Monday. Carter's casket lay in state last week, and a service was held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. Biden, Trump, and other political figures and dignitaries paid their respects to the 39th president before a private service in Georgia
