Texas Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to freeze Austin's taxes over police funding cuts

In fiery remarks Tuesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that Austin’s plan to cut $150 million from its police department, a third of its annual budget, puts “residents in danger and invites lawlessness,” while proposing that any Texas city that cuts funding for police would lose its ability to raise property taxes—cutting off a vital revenue source for local governments.

have moved to cut funding following demands of protesters to “defund the police” after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody. But Abbott, along with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick , House Speaker Dennis Bonnen and other top GOP leaders, strongly oppose Austin’s move. In response, the GOP leadership has proposed legislation that would prohibit Austin or any other Texas city from raising property taxes if any cuts come to law enforcement.

The legislation will be a “top priority” in the state Senate, Patrick said, with Bonnen adding that the House “will 100% support this legislation.”“They are constricting their ability to ever meet the other needs they have,” Abbott warned of cities that make cuts to law enforcement, saying the law would apply even in tough economic times where a locality might be considering across-the-board cuts.

"Because of Trump and Abbott’s failures, 500,000 Texans have contracted the virus and more than 10,000 Texans are dead. It never had to be this way,” Rahman said."If Donald Trump and Greg Abbott were really focused on safety for our families, they would have listened to doctors and scientists instead of lobbyists and donors.
