AUSTIN – The chair of the Texas GOP panned a Republican-led effort to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton as a “sham” meant to stop the state’s conservative...
against Paxton that accused the state’s top lawyer of sweeping abuses, including bribery, obstruction of justice and disregard of official duty.An impeachment vote in the Texas House could come as soon as this weekend. If a majority of representatives endorse the move, Paxton would immediately be barred from performing his official duties. The Senate then would hold a trial on whether to remove him from office.vote to remove Paxton should a trial proceed.
But Patrick, a Republican, said senators “will all be responsible as any juror would be if that turns out to be, and I think the members will do their duty.”Gov. Greg Abbott has not said anything publicly about the impeachment effort. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.Paxton, a third-term Republican from Collin County, has responded by saying the effort would overturn a “free and fair election” based on hearsay and gossip.
Since taking statewide office in 2015, Paxton’s been dogged by legal troubles and fellow Republicans have largely stayed silent.after a months-long probe into a $3.3 million whistleblower settlement Paxton struck with four former staffers., who in late 2020 accused Paxton of abusing the power of his office to help a campaign donor and Austin real estate developer.
