South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary moved 37 gators — like 800-pound Big Padre and 250-pound Lady Laguna — ahead of Beryl.
See you later, alligators. The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary relocated nearly 40 alligators — including an 800-pound male named Big Padre and a 250-pound female named Lady Laguna — ahead of Hurricane Beryl to ensure that they won't escape into the surrounding community should flooding and storm surges pummel the coast.
Beryl will be entering the Gulf of Mexico. Here's how it could end up near South Texas 'We decided we wanted to be ahead of the potential hurricane,' said Cristin Enholm the sanctuary's executive director. 'We wanted to be ahead of the storm, any chaos, any traffic jams,' she said, noting how tropical storm Albert in June left much of the gator's environment flooded. 'We wanted to be prepared. I'm really happy we made that decision.
