Texas fires men's basketball coach Chris Beard weeks after arrest and suspension
Beard was booked in Travis County Jail at 4:18 a.m. on Dec. 12, Earlier that morning, Austin Police Department officers were dispatched to the Tarrytown residence Beard lives in with his fiancée after receiving a 9-1-1 about an urgent disturbance on the block.Randi Trew, Beard’s fiancée, told responding APD officer they had been “upset” with each other for a couple of days and that their verbal altercation turned physical that night after Beard returned home from work.
She told officers Beard “snapped on me and became super violent” about 10-to-15 minutes later in their master bedroom and “choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me,” in addition to bruising her leg, throwing her around and “going nuts.” Bite marks and bruises were visible on her body, according to the affidavit.
Beard, 49, faces a third-degree charge of assault against a family member by impeding breathe or circulation. Conviction on a third-degree felony in Texas carries a potential prison of sentence of up to 10 years. Beard has an emergency protective order active against him until Feb. 10, and he’s currently awaiting a Jan. 18 court hearing.
