Oklahoma forward Jalen Hill fouls Texas guard Marcus Carr from behind in overtime. Carr had six of his 16 points in OT.NORMAN, Okla. — Texas and Oklahoma spent much of Tuesday’s game at the Lloyd Noble Center bound together, neither able to untangle from the other. Which felt fitting, considering these two schools have been entwined as border rivals for more than a century now.
“I think you gotta recognize our guys’ effort tonight,” Texas coach Chris Beard said afterward. “Look, Oklahoma is right in the middle of the fight, trying to build a résumé like we all are. We knew we’re gonna get their best shot tonight. Tonight’s a valuable lesson. We’ll draw from this later on in the season when we need the confidence to win another overtime game.”
Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop exemplified all that. With 6-foot-9 junior Tre Mitchell taking time away from the team and fellow 6-9 junior Dylan Disu still finding his legs, the 6-7 Bishop and 6-6 Allen served as de facto bigs, though it’s unfair to shove that versatile pair into any one box. “I mean, coach told us a lot of guys were gonna have to step up,” Allen said after the win. “We had four guys over 15 points today, so that’s huge for us. And just keeps getting better and better. I mean, it was gutsy.”
Even with those Texas starters rolling, this game came down to who could make one or two more plays. It was the Longhorns — more precisely, it was Allen.
