Mike Morath made the recommendation as concerns rise that phones are harmful to students’ mental health and distract them from learning.
Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath said next year lawmakers should ban the use of cellphones in public schools across the state. Morath’s endorsement of a statewide ban came during his testimony last week at a Senate Education Committee hearing, where he called the use of cellular devices “extremely harmful” to student progress. “If it were in my power, I would have already banned them in all schools in the state,” Morath said.
Northside Independent School District recently became the latest in a handful of public school systems in the San Antonio area to prohibit the use of phones during class time, requiring they be kept in backpacks. Even in districts that have no blanket policy, a few teachers and principals require students to surrender them during class. Most allow cell phone use during lunch and some in the hallways between class periods. Sen.
