Texas drops College World Series opener to Notre Dame, will face Texas A&M in elimination bracket

Texas starting pitcher Pete Hansen throws to a Notre Dame batter during the first inning of an NCAA College World Series baseball game Friday, June 17, 2022, in Omaha, Neb. Notre Dame tagged Texas starter Pete Hansen for six runs in five innings Friday, sending the No. 9 Longhorns to the elimination bracket of the College World Series after a 7-3 win for the Fighting Irish at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.

A second-team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball and one of five finalists for the College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year award, Hansen entered the NCAA Tournament 10-1 with a 3.01 ERA. Notre Dame posted its first run just two batters into the game, as Jared Miller hit a 92 mph fastball 335 feet the other way, just over the right-field fence for a homer.

A hit by pitch loaded the baes for the Irish again, but Hansen forced a lineout to second base to strand the runners.
