Texas drag show bills target free speech | Opinion
More than 50 people gathered Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, to protest the university president's decision to cancel a drag show on campus. Our country has a long, proud legal and cultural tradition of protecting the free expression of the people.
Such targeting represents an unfair and unconstitutional infringement on rights of free expression, and these bills should be rejected. It’s easy to see how this could go off the rails. Who is the judge of what it means to “exhibit as a male”? Is that a woman wearing a pair of jeans and a sport coat? What is an appeal “to the prurient interest of sex”? That is surely in the eye of the beholder.where the men wear wigs and silk stockings, be at risk of the state’s heavy hand?
