Texas DPS protests release of Joshua Wright killing footage

Adrian Wright, Joshua’s sister, speaks at a protest to call for justice for her late brother Jan. 22 at the Hays County Public Safety building in San Marcos. Wright was an inmate who was being treated for a medical issue at Ascension Seton Hays Hospital when he was shot by a corrections officer Dec. 12.

“Because this is an ongoing criminal case, the release of potential evidence would interfere with the investigation and prosecution of this case,” DPS said in its letter to the attorney general.until the investigation is complete, saying it would interfere with the investigation. The body-camera footage relates to the Dec. 12 incident in which Wright, 36, died after he was shot by a Hays County corrections officer at Ascension Seton Hays hospital in Kyle, where he was receiving treatment. The county sheriff’s office asserts that Wright attempted to assault the officer and attempted to escape the hospital, while a lawyer for Wright’s family has questioned law enforcement’s narrative of the shooting.

The corrections officer who shot Wright, who has not been named, returned to work pending the outcome of the investigation.
