Everyone wants the government to be efficient, and Texas is no exception, but the state does not need its own version of DOGE.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, center, holds a signed bill creating the Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office during a ceremony inside the state Capitol on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, in Austin, Texas.Everyone wants the government to be efficient, and Texas is no exception.
But does the state really need its own version of thetasked with identifying and eliminatingAdding an office that duplicates those functions doesn’t seem very efficient. And if the existing mechanisms aren’t adequate, wouldn’t it make the most sense to strengthen them instead of adding yet another layer of government to the mix? We asked the bill’s author, Sen. Phil King, R-Weatherford, what separates this new office from existing ones but had not received a response as of this writing.Abbott said that state leaders have worked with the business community to slash inefficient systems and regulations for years, but Washington’s DOGE has “crystallized” strategies states can use, this newspaper reported. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick described the new office as “DOGE, Texas-style.” It looks to us like this whole song and dance is little more than an attempt to ride the coattails of powerful national political figures. With that said, there are some good parts of the bill. It would direct the new Regulatory Efficiency Office to work with the secretary of state and other agencies to create an interactive website allowing the public to easily get information about rules, forms and filings. That could be a big relief to small businesses struggling with paperwork and red tape. But publishing rules and regulations is something the secretary of state is already responsible for.from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University ranks Texas as the fifth most heavily regulated state. No one disputes that needs fixing if Texas wants a prosperous future.has never been its pursuit of efficiency. The problem is that it’s a sledgehammer approach that would destroy entire systems instead of doing the grueling work of searching out flaws and fixing them. It often forgets how easy it is to tear something down and how hard it is to build back up. Since this is a done deal, the best we can hope for is that Texas’ version will conduct its business with the sort of deliberate care and deep consideration its national counterpart has never shown.Dallas Morning News editorials are written by the paper's Editorial Board and serve as the voice and view of the paper.
