A letter to state election officials says the independent’s campaign failed to submit the required number of valid petition signatures.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speaks during the Libertarian National Convention at the Washington Hilton in Washington, May 24, 2024. AUSTIN — Democrats seeking to keep Robert F. Kennedy Jr. off the ballot in Texas say the independent presidential candidate’s campaign failed to submit the necessary number of petition signatures.
Trump led Biden by 9 percentage points, 49% to 40%, among likely Texas voters in a University of Houston-Texas Southern University pollTexas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said running for election as an independent “takes work” in Texas, and, for democracy’s sake, candidates should get on the ballot “in legal and transparent ways.”
“Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s attempt to overwhelm the system with bad signatures is just another example of his campaign’s disregard for the rules,” Hinojosa said in a statement. “The vast majority, seventy percent, of those signatures failed miserably to meet the basic criteria outlined in Texas election code and we urge the Secretary of State’s office to reject the campaign’s application.”
To be valid, a signature must come from a Texan who is registered to vote in the state or has a registration certificate that will become effective by Election Day. The voter’s address; voter registration number or county of residence; the signing date; and printed name must be included.“Because Mr. Kennedy submitted a deficient number of petition signatures by the statutory deadline, the law requires his application be rejected,” Dunn added.
