Steven Nelson, facing execution on February 5th for the 2011 murder of Rev. Clint Dobson, maintains his innocence in the killing and argues for rehabilitation. Despite overwhelming evidence against him, Nelson and his supporters are rallying for clemency, highlighting his transformation within prison and the need to consider his entire life story.
With his court appeals nearly exhausted and an execution less than a week away, the man convicted in the killing of a young Arlington pastor says his life is not beyond saving. Steven Nelson is scheduled to be executed Feb. 5. A Tarrant County jury sentenced Nelson to die after convicting him in the death of the Rev. Clint Dobson.
“I felt safer more in prison than I did at home, to tell you the truth,” he said. “I didn’t care what I was doing was poisoning my community, because it’s all about me now.”Nelson was on probation for an aggravated assault charge in February 2011 when he was introduced to the two men he alleges carried out the murder that landed him on death row.not naming either man because a grand jury declined to indict one of them, while the other never faced a murder charge.
He took the stand against the recommendations of his attorneys to tell his version of events. The jury convicted him anyway. Dobson earned his master of divinity degree in 2008 from Baylor University’s theological seminary, where he was also named “Preacher of the Year.” He joined NorthPointe Baptist Church that same year.“His mission in life was teaching the Word, that people would understand the beauty and truth of God’s Word,” his obituary says. Outside of the church, he loved sports, namely football and baseball, and had a passion for music, teaching himself both piano and guitar.
After Nelson was sentenced to death, church officials with Arlington First Baptist wrote in a statement they were confident justice had been served.“We now can move forward to a greater level of healing since this part of the saga is behind us,” the statement said. “We will never tire of proclaiming the life-giving message of hope that we know to be the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the message for which Clint gave his life.
