We recommend in the race for Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 7
Judicial candidates often take a back seat in voters’ minds, but they shouldn’t, particularly when our system of checks and balances is on the line. In this year’s elections for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, judicial independence is on the ballot.
That is why in the race for Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 7, we recommend Democrat Nancy Mulder over Republican Gina Parker. The winner in this race will replace Judge Barbara Hervey who lost the primary to Parker earlier this year.Mulder, 54, has a strong record of legal service, having served as defense attorney and prosecutor. Since 2015, she has been a criminal judge in Dallas County. Currently, she presides over Criminal District Court No. 6.
Mulder often livestreams her proceedings, adding an extra layer of transparency but also a need for hypervigilance. She recently learned this the hard way. Ain which she voiced an opinion resulted in a mistrial. She ended up recusing herself from the case. In our interview, Mulder took full responsibility for the mistake. While this incident is a blemish in her career, we believe this error does not disqualify her as the best option in this race.
The Dallas Bar Association gave her an overall 80% favorable rating in the 2023 judicial evaluation poll. She is also one of the few judges who are voluntarily submitting court data to Dallas County’s Jail Population Management Committee for its monthly reports. Parker, a Waco attorney, was not available for our in-person interview, did not respond to our emails, and her answers on the Voter Guide lacked detail. She favors the creation of more specialty courts and believes legislative action is needed against “liberal prosecutors” who set low bail for dangerous offenders or release them on no bail.Parker, 62, has no experience on the bench, but she has Attorney General Ken Paxton’s backing.
