A couple whose pit bulls killed an 81-year-old Air Force veteran on San Antonio 's West Side last year face a day of reckoning today. Christian Alexander Moreno and his wife, Abilene Schnieder , both 32, could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, or they could be placed on probation for up to 10 years. State District Judge Velia Meza is scheduled to hand down their sentences at 1:30 p.m. today in a downtown San Antonio courtroom.

Her husband bolted from the car, grabbed the dog and struck the animal with his right hand, yelling, “Leave her alone! Leave her alone!” At that point, the dog released Janie Najera, grabbed her husband’s wrist and knocked him to the ground, she testified. Janie Najera said she fell, landing on her back between her car and the curb, while the dog dragged her husband away by the wrist.
San Antonio residents vent outrage over string of dog attacks A 53-second video filmed by a witness who also tried to stop the mayhem showed the two pit bulls relentlessly attacking Ramon Najera as he lay face down in a grassy area next to the sidewalk and the street. One of the dogs broke away and held witnesses at bay so they couldn't reach Najera. The other dog continued to bite and tear at Najera as he yelled for help and raised himself to his hands and knees.
