Thanks to brisk northerly winds and ample clouds, temperatures will be slow to rise Thursday. Peak temps will be about 5 to 15 degrees below average.
A cold front swept through Texas on Wednesday night and into early Thursday. Behind the front, a surge of cold, northerly winds into the Lone Star State is bringing below-average temperatures to nearly the entire state for Thanksgiving.
Thankfully, most Texas cities will be staying completely dry. So if you have any last-minute travel plans or you plan on spending part of the day outdoors, you should be good to go — you’ll probably just want a sweater or jacket before heading out the door. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect for the holiday. Texas Thanksgiving forecast Morning: Morning low temperatures will hover in the low 50s in and around San Antonio. However, most regions farther north, from the Hill Country through North Texas, will start the day with temperatures in the 40s. The coldest spot in the state will be the Texas Panhandle, where temps will fall into the 20s and low 30s. That area has a chance of very light rain and snow showers through the early morning, but accumulations, if any, are expected to be extremely light. The rest of the state is expected to stay dry throughout the day. Afternoon: Breezy northerly winds, along with partly to mostly cloudy skies, will only allow for a slow warm-up throughout the day. Most spots will experience peak temperatures that are between 5 and 15 degrees below average for late November. West Texas: The chilliest temperatures are expected in this region. High temps will only reach the upper 40s from Amarillo to Lubbock. A bit farther south, Midland to Abilene will top out in the low 50s. North Texas: Highs are expected to be slightly warmer here. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex will experience highs in the low to mid-50s, while Waco will warm into the upper 50s. South Texas: This will be the warmest region of the state, but highs will still be below average. San Antonio will top out in the low 60s, Houston will reach the mid-60s and Laredo will be close to 70 degrees. Cold Friday Much colder air will arrive late Thursday into early Friday morning. The San Antonio area can expect low temps near 40 degrees, but most spots north of the Alamo City will be even colder. The Hill Country eastward to New Braunfels and San Marcos will fall into the middle to upper 30s. Farther north, many parts of Texas will wake up to freezing temperatures Friday morning. This includes the Panhandle, along with large parts of West and North Texas. Temperatures will once again stay well below average Friday afternoon. North Texas will experience highs in the low to mid-50s, while South Texas will be a bit warmer, reaching the low 60s again in the San Antonio metro area. Cool weather pattern The big difference between this cold front and the past fronts we’ve experienced so far this fall is that those previous fronts only brought cool weather for a day or two, while this front will keep us cool for a much longer period. San Antonio will warm slightly over the weekend, but high temperatures are still expected to reach only the mid- to upper 60s both Saturday and Sunday. Low temperatures also will stay in the 40s. By early next week, moisture-rich air from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to increase from the south, and rain chances will increase as a result. San Antonio’s rain chances Monday will be about 20% and rise to 40-50% by Tuesday. Because of the increased moisture and cloudiness, temps also will stay cool with highs in the 60s through the middle of next week.
