A recent study found that climate change has contributed to longer allergy seasons in cities across the U.S. including several in Texas.
Allergy season is getting longer, stronger and more severe in cities nationwide, especially in one Texas metropolitan area where higher pollen counts have added weeks of stuffiness and sneezing over the past several decades. As the planet gets warmer and winters milder, plants have more time to release allergy-inducing pollen.
Abilene and Sweetwater also have five more days of hay fever and other springtime ailments. That's nothing compared to Reno, Nevada, which topped the list with a growth of 95 days, followed by Las Cruces, New Mexico with 65 more days; Medford, Oregon with 65 more days; Boise, Idaho with 51 more days and Tupelo, Mississippi with 50 more days. San Antonio has no documented change in its allergy season, but don’t let that fool you.
