El Camino owner Ricky Ortiz ties the haircut, which has deep Mexican and Indigenous roots, to gang life. UTSA prof Sylvia Mendoza calls it internalized racism.

After facing online criticism for a series of anti-' Edgar ' posts, El Camino owner Ricky Ortiz doubled down on his stance in an interview with the San Antonio Current . 'People accusing me of racism are speaking from a place of ignorance,' Ortiz told The Current . 'They don't want to acknowledge or admit that the majority of the kids that are getting these haircuts want to be in a culture influenced by gang affiliation and things like that.

In fact, Ortiz claims he sported the style as a teen when he was involved in “hood rat sh-t.” But Sylvia Mendoza, assistant professor of Mexican American Studies at University of Texas-San Antonio, said associating a certain type of hairstyle with criminal activity can be a slippery slope — especially in a city like San Antonio, where that hairstyle is so deeply rooted in Mexican and Indigenous culture.
