The FDA said milk samples from areas with infected herds of dairy cows are more likely to test positive.

"In the rare event that contaminated milk does enter the supply chain, pasteurization effectively kills viruses even if traces of the virus remain detectable."

The pasteurization process involves heating milk to around 161 degrees for 15 to 30 seconds, according to TDA. Dairy cattle are required to receive a negative test for influenza A virus at an approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network facility before interstate movement. Dairy cattle moving interstate must adhere to conditions specified by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service .
