The state has also set a record for hospitalizations five days in a row.
Texas has again reported its highest single-day increase in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began—and Memorial Day gatherings may be partially to blame, Gov. Greg Abbott said at a news conference Tuesday, which he held to address growing concerns over rising hospitalizations in the state after record highs for hospitalizations have now been reported for five days in a row.
But while hospitalizations have increased, officials have said there isn’t a concern that health care capacity will be reached;"We are better prepared to deal with Covid-19 today than we were back in March and April,” Abbott said, while the state remains “laser-focused on maintaining abundant hospital capacity."
Abbott said he expects the percentage of tests coming back positive to decline soon, saying many of the positive tests have come from “congregant settings” like jails and prisons, and the state hopes to soon complete its widespread testing of those facilities. Texas is currently in Phase 3 of its reopening, and restaurants were allowed to reopen this weekend at 75% of normal operating capacity.“There are some explanations for why these numbers are so high,” Abbott said of the rising coronavirus metrics, adding “It could be Memorial Day celebrations. It could be bar settings.”Several states are also dealing with coronavirus spikes, just a few weeks after Memorial Day gatherings and protests following the death of George Floyd.
