Texas A&M still fighting the odds to make NCAA Tournament

The Aggies have won two in a row after a five-game losing streak and close regular season at Mississippi on NCAA bubble.

COLLEGE STATION — Mississippi coach Chris Beard took his team to a College Station barbecue restaurant in late January, and the next night the Rebels beat Texas A&M by three points on the Aggies’ home court.

“Mississippi has great food, not good, great,” said Beard, who spent a chunk of his teenage years in The Woodlands. “But there’s just something about Texas barbecue, like brisket moist.” The Aggies in turn ate in Mississippi on Friday night, and in turn will try and pull out their own meaty victory on the road when they play at Ole Miss at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rebels started strong in their first year under Beard, a former Texas coach, but are 3-7 since their 71-68 win at A&M on Jan. 27. Mississippi would have to win next week’s SEC tournament in Nashville, Tenn., to make the NCAA Tournament. “I know it’s a lot easier to do when you’re playing that last home game trying to win the SEC regular season championship,” Beard said. “That’s not the reality we’re in right now, but I do think these players are worthy of a good crowd on Saturday.” The Aggies are trying to play their way into the NCAA Tournament and have won two straight games at Georgia and at home against Mississippi State following a five-game losing streak. “We’ve just hung in there,” said A&M coach Buzz Williams, who is still seeking his first NCAA Tournament victory in his five seasons with the Aggies. “Even in the two-and-a-half-weeks when we lost five in a row, I think their togetherness never changed. It’s hard on your morale to lose.” A&M likely would need a win at Ole Miss and then at least two wins in the SEC tournament to merit serious consideration for a second consecutive NCAA postseason berth. “One of our best skills is staying together,” A&M forward Wildens Leveque said of the Aggies handling crunch time this season. Joe Lunardi, ESPN’s NCAA Tournament expert, didn’t even have the Aggies among his first eight out as of Friday. A&M is 3-4 against Ole Miss in games in Oxford, Miss., since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. “Both teams … are competing to play in March,” Leveque said of the Aggies and Rebels. “It’s going to be a hostile environment because they want to win as bad as we do. … We’ve just got to stay disciplined, no matter what the score is.”
