Texas A&M running backs Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane smile after the team’s win over Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, in College Station.COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M should be set at running back in 2022 despite Isaiah Spiller’s early exit to the NFL. With that proclamation, Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher should find some solid wood around the Bright Football Complex to knock on.

That’s a bit misleading, however, considering the swift Achane is still present and accounted for with the A&M program — but springtime is when outdoor track and field results count. “I’d like to expand my game, my route game for sure,” Spiller told reporters during the recent NFL combine in Indianapolis. “Prolonging my career in the NFL is a big deal for me. I feel like catching the ball on third down — being an all-around back — is a really big deal in the NFL now.”

Three years ago during Fisher’s second season at A&M, the Aggies lost starting running back Jashaun Corbin to a season-ending injury in Week 2. He ultimately transferred, and in the span of about 20 months around that time the Aggies lost running backs Charles Strong, Deneric Prince, Jacob Kibodi, Cordarrian Richardson and Vernon Jackson to either transfers or injuries.

“You don’t realize how big LJ and Amari are — they’re over 200-pound guys and very physical and very strong,” Fisher said. “LJ weighed 210 pounds the other day and looks really good and Amari is in the 202-203 range and very physical.”
