Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher says he’s a proponent of high schoolers and...
Heisman hopeful Devon Achane missed A&M’s spring drills while running track with coach Jimbo Fisher’s blessing.COLLEGE STATION — In a snowballing age of specialization, of parents and private coaches pointing youths toward a single sport before they’re teenagers, Jimbo Fisher claims he’s all about expanded fancies.
The two-sport question bubbled up this spring because Fisher was missing starting running back Devon Achane and starting center Bryce Foster for the Aggies’ annual spring game April 9. Instead of lamenting their absence, Fisher praised Achane’s sprint times for A&M’s celebrated track team and shot putter Foster’s impressive heaves on the “field” side of things.
“If they’re good at two sports, that’s not their fault,” said Fisher, who also believes if they’re only average in one of the endeavors they should zero in on one sport. “Why shouldn’t they get to do it is the way I look at it.” “Jameis was a great example of that,” Fisher said of the rare ability to shine in two sports in college. “He was going to be a first- or second-round baseball guy, just like he was with football. He could have gone either way.”
