Texas A&M insistent that UT should be annual football rival
Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork vociferously supports the nine-game scheduling model for SEC football, allowing for three opponents who are played annually.A lone annual rival in the rivalry-rich Southeastern Conference makes no sense to Texas A&M — especially when the Aggies might not play their main rival 100 miles away annually in football.
“In an eight-game model, Texas wants to keep Oklahoma and Oklahoma wants to keep Texas,” Bjork said of the longstanding Red River Rivalry. “So if you have only one ‘permanent’ rival, that leaves us with LSU. We’re fine with LSU, but we want to play Texas and we want a third permanent rival. That gets you to the nine-game model.”If retained when UT and OU enter the SEC, the eight-game model would pair eight league games with four nonconference games.
“We need some more information and some more time to think through possibilities,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said during the spring meetings. “We’re going to use that time because we get to set our timeline on this.”
