Slocum on Tuesday cheerfully soaked in the hustle of what has become a spectacle on the Texas A&M campus: the Aggies’ annual pro day in the team’s indoor complex.
When Slocum, who has won more football games at A&M than anyone, began pro day 31 years ago with the idea of helping his players realize their pro dreams, it was a bare-bones affair heavy on timed drills and random interaction between NFL personnel and NFL hopefuls. “That’s what it’s all about, when you build the culture of an organization,” said Jimbo Fisher, entering his fifth season as A&M coach. “Then hopefully each year you can roll that over, so there are now guys you can reference and ask, ‘What does it take to get there? What is like? Does the training here put me in position to be successful?’ builds your culture.”
That’s another thing about Fisher’s approach to pro day: Players who exited the program early are still welcomed back to perform in front of NFL personnel, just as former A&M quarterback Nick Starkel did Tuesday. Starkel has since played at Arkansas and San Jose State. “This is what they dream of,” Fisher said of his former players earning the chance to show their skills in front of representatives from every NFL team. “A lot of these guys I was able to recruit and you remember the first time you sat in their living rooms and the first time you saw them in camps, and they had those dreams.Green and Leal, a former Judson standout, are potential first-round selections in Las Vegas on April 28, the first day of the draft.
