Texas A&M strengthens postseason hopes, takes series from No. 5 Florida
Texas A&M lefthander Will Johnston allowed one run in a career-high 4 1/3 innings against Florida on Sunday.COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M slugger Jace LaViolette drove a ball that fell a foot short of exiting Blue Bell Park in Sunday's sixth inning against No. 5 Florida. The ball ricocheted off the fence in left-center field, and LaViolette wound up with a triple.
Take Sunday, a 3-2 A&M victory over Florida the Aggies needed in a big way — and wildly won on a balk by Gators closer Brandon Neely. A&M won the series over the Gators after falling in the Friday night opener 6-5, another near miss with two runners left stranded in the bottom of the ninth, and winning 15-2 on Saturday.
A&M won two games last year in Omaha in finishing 2-2 on college baseball’s biggest stage, doubling their all-time number of CWS wins in one visit. Starter Troy Wansing and reliever Chris Cortez kept the Gators at bay Saturday night, and a trio of lefthanders — starter Will Johnston and relievers Evan Aschenbeck and Brandyn Garcia — limited Florida to five hits and a pair of solo home runs on Sunday.
