Texas A&M, unranked a little more than a month ago, has positioned itself to host NCAA Tournament games in a regional and super regional leading into the College World Series.
The Aggies under first-year coach Jim Schlossnagle face either Florida or Alabama, which play earlier Saturday in an elimination game, in Saturday’s third game, and are one win from playing in Sunday’s 2 p.m. title game. A&M grabbed its first lead of the game an inning later on a two-RBI single by Kole Kaler against a drawn-in infield and after Rock was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth. The Aggies padded their lead in the seventh thanks in large part to a three-run homer by former Klein High standout Trevor Werner.
The Aggies also taped a picture of A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher to their dugout wall with “OUR COACH” scrawled on it. Fisher and Alabama coach Nick Saban engaged in a long-distance verbal spat last week that drew national attention.
