Johnson was signed after rookie Tank Dell suffered a season-ending injury, providing a veteran presence in the wide receiving corps. However, his time with the Texans was short-lived, as they announced his release.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans addressed Johnson's departure at the team's news conference, acknowledging the decision but offering no specific reasons. Johnson had limited playing time during his brief tenure, catching a single pass for 12 yards against the LA Chargers on Saturday and two passes for 12 yards against the Titans. Prior to joining the Texans, Johnson spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, achieving his most productive years with the organization. His standout season came in 2021, when he hauled in 107 passes for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. Following his time in Pittsburgh, he saw time with the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and now the Texans. Johnson's release leaves Houston with a receiving corps consisting of Nico Collins, Robert Woods, Xavier Hutchinson, and John Metchie. In a separate move, the Texans placed tight end Cade Stover on the injured reserve list. Stover participated in the game against the Chargers, recording four receptions for 28 yards.
