Asked in the Quinnipiac survey who would do a better job of “handling the economy,” 52 percent chose Abbott, versus 38 percent for O’Rourke. The proportion was nearly identical among independent voters, who O’RourkeVoters in the UT Tyler-DMN poll, the most recent statewide survey, also gave Abbott the advantage on “improving our economy,” “securing the border” and “reducing crime.

The polls also offer a glimpse at the attitudes of voting groups within the broader electorate, including those more likely to align with O’Rourke, such as women and young voters. In Jones’ recent survey, 76 and 70 percent of women listed gun control and abortion, respectively, as key issues in deciding their pick for governor — versus just 61 percent of men on both issues.“Younger Texans are much more in sync with Beto on a wide range of policies than they are with Abbott,” Jones said.
