After attempting to convert a fourth-and-1 via a play-action bootleg late in the second quarter Sunday, Texans quarterback Davis Mills found himself sacked by Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack.The Texans' offense has an identity crisis. The unit defines itself one way, acts another, then offers explanations as confounding as the questions themselves.
Running backs coach Danny Barrett said in the offseason the Texans needed a “home run hitter” at the position, and after Pierce proved he can pulverize the proverbial baseball on that tantalizing toss, head coach Lovie Smith and offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton pulled the equivalent of pinch-hitting for him with the bases loaded.On the very next drive, the Texans trailed 24-7 with a minute remaining in the first half. Smith elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 at the Chargers' 24.
Smith’s statement stood in stark contrast to his disapproval of the starting running back’s sparse snaps in a Week 1 tie against the Colts in which Burkhead was dropped for a 2-yard loss on a third-and-1 run in overtime that produced a draw-sealing punt. Smith wanted his best player getting the most snaps at the most crucial moments. Why wasn’t Pierce in the game?The coaching staff said in training camp Pierce needed to improve as a pass catcher.
“I mean, if you think the identity of somebody’s offense is a ground-and-pound team, you expect them to run on that play,” Mills said. “We were trying to catch them off-guard and make a play off the edge.”
