Nick Caserio's second roster in Houston is trending toward keeping more productive...
Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce runs through the middle of the San Francisco 49ers defense during the first half of an NFL football game Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, in Houston. The first year of Texans general manager Nick Caserio’s rebuild involved a necessary roster overhaul that not only jettisoned long-tenured players but also scarred the franchise’s budget with considerable dead money hits that limited the team’s spending both immediately and for future seasons.
There were similar surprising and era-ending cuts in Caserio’s second initial 53-man roster, a 2022 Texans team that was officially finalized Tuesday. But the financial ramifications were nominal, and the franchise is still poised for an eventual spending spree next offseason. And while some of the player departures were unexpected, they mostly underlined the team’s shift toward pursuing more productive players.
Houston’s most confounding move was releasing running back Marlon Mack. The franchise signed the 26-year-old veteran to boost a historically inefficient run game, but the former Colts 1,000-yard rusher was cut despite averaging 4.3 yards per carry in three preseason games.Houston Texans long snapper Jon Weeks , linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis and linebacker Blake Cashman drop back in punt block protection during an NFL training camp Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022, in Houston.
All nine of Houston’s 2022 draft picks made the 53-man roster, including first-round selectee Kenyon Green, who is expected to start at left guard in place of Scharping. Three undrafted free agents also made the team. Kurt Hinish, a defensive tackle from Notre Dame, edged out Blacklock with an impressive preseason.
The Texans are third on the NFL’s waiver wire list, which gives them prime positioning to make a claim on players released by other teams. The franchise could pursue a wide receiver, since the team has only four under contract following the release of veteran Chris Conley.Houston Texans quarterback Jeff Driskel is chased out of bounds by New Orleans Saints defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon during the first half of an NFL football game Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022, in Houston.
